New Classes! Drama and Storytelling

Drama is a superhero suit, a wizard’s robe, the knight’s armor! It allows a person — the actor — to be clothed in an invention of him or herself and immerse in an imaginary world. No wonder children love play-acting and drama! Before the curtains part and the house lights dim, and before the first line is uttered for the audience, the process of drama is what excites the playwright, director, actors, set builders, prop makers and costume designers. As discussed in Education Towards Freedom, first published in Germany in 1972: “Through looking on and participating, through words, gestures, rhythms, and motions of all kinds, feelings are awakened into existence, feelings which otherwise might have remained dormant throughout one’s whole life.”

Register your children for Drama at WLR and see their imaginations take flight!

Playtime Storytelling & Drama for Grades 1 – 3 is offered at our Rancho Cordova location on Mondays, 1:20 – 2:10 p.m., beginning September 12th. In each class, students will create their own story: the characters, the obstacle, the crisis, the solution, the ending. It will be a process of playacting through the plot. Students will  discover the narration, dialogue, movement, and possibly music, living into the group imagination in a playful and creative activity. No homework is required, as each story process will be contained within the class period.

Drama for Grades 4-8 is offered at our Davis location on Tuesdays, 12:10 – 1:00 p.m., beginning September 13th. In this class, the children will explore the process of drama and perform a play or excerpt of a play written by Dr. Rick Tan. They will learn the essential elements such as plot and dialogue in a collaborative, highly interactive way.
